Exacta's interpreters are screened carefully for linguistic competence. Our interpreters are prepared to interpret verbal and non-verbal communication. Subtle insinuations, expressions, and the tone of voice are among the many nonverbal factors that play an important role during human interaction. Competence and attention to details significantly reduces the possibility of omissions, misunderstanding, and confusion.

We ensure that the interpreter assigned is familiar with the subject matter and with the jargon of the industry. Our aspiration is to make sure that the linguistic skills and knowledge of our interpreters surpass your expectations.

Working With An Interpreter

Speak slowly and in short sentences. The longer either party talks, the greatest the margin of error.

Avoid ambiguous questions or statements, abstractions, idiomatic expressions, slang, similes and metaphors.

Avoid using relatives as interpreters.

Look and speak directly to your client, not to the interpreter.

Be patient. A good interpretation of a specific statement may require long explanatory sentences.

Mentally organize what you will say in order to avoid confusing the interpreter with contradictions, conditional ideas or stumbling over words.

Expect that the interpreter may occasionally pause to ask you for clarification of terms or thoughts in order to provide an accurate interpretation.

Listen to the client and watch her/his nonverbal communication. You can obtain information by observing facial expressions, voice intonation, and body movements.

It is crucial to establish effective interaction with the interpreter in order to keep the lines of communication open between all the interlocutors.

What To Expect From A Good Interpreter

Confidentiality
The interpreter shall be committed to protecting and maintaining the privacy of the personal information received in the course of an interpretation.

Impartiality
The interpreter shall be impartial and unbiased. The interpreter shall not allow personal opinions to interfere with her/his duties.

Accuracy
The interpreter should render, to the best of her/his abilities, a complete and accurate interpretation without altering or omitting anything that has been stated.

Professional courtesy
The interpreter shall provide excellent customer service. She/he shall maintain a professional demeanour, be courteous, and punctual. The interpreter must wear proper business attire when attending an assignment.

Disclosure of ability
The interpreter shall, at all times, assess her/his ability to maintain the highest standards for professional interpretation. The interpreter shall immediately convey any reservations about her/his abilities to successfully complete the assignment, for the customer. The interpreter shall decline any assignment she/he believes to be beyond her/his technical knowledge or linguistic ability.

Glossary

Consecutive interpreting
Oral translation of a speaker’s words into another language when the speaker has finished speaking or pauses for interpreting. More formal than ad hoc interpreting and used, for example, in formal business meetings, for negotiations, training sessions, or lectures.

Simultaneous interpreting
Oral translation of a speaker’s words into another language while the speaker is speaking. The interpreter usually sits in a booth and uses audio equipment.

Whispering
Similar to simultaneous interpreting, whereby the interpreter sits close to the listener and whispers the translation without technical aids.

Ad hoc interpreting
Spoken translation between two languages in informal conversations between two or more people. Used, for example in business meetings, for phone calls, during site visits and social events. The term is sometimes used loosely to include consecutive interpreting.

Sight translation
Oral translation of a written text.

Interpreter
Provides oral (spoken) translation of a speaker’s words from one language into another.

Court interpreter
Interpreter with special subject knowledge, providing interpretation during legal proceedings. Requirements regarding accreditation and certification for court interpreting vary from country to country.

Accredited translator/interpreter
Translator/interpreter who has received accreditation from a professional institute such as the ITI or the ATA. Accreditation - a requirement for membership – is usually issued on the basis of examination and experience.
